Mission
The goal of the Committee is the restoration and preservation
of the clock tower on the Joshua Eaton Elementary School in
Reading, Massachusetts.  Named after the sole Reading
resident to give his life in the Revolutionary War, this beautiful
school was designed with a graceful clock tower overlooking
the Town of Reading.  The schedule goal for restoration is
summer, 2007, as a fitting commemoration for the 250th
anniversary of Joshua Eaton's birth.

The Committee is a grass-roots team of individuals with
interest in this restoration project.  Members include parents of
current and past students, school staff, and neighbors.
Background and
Current Status
The Joshua Eaton Elementary School was dedicated in 1949.
Designed by architect George H. Sidebottom, its features
included the distinctive clock tower.  With clock faces on all
four sides, the tower also included a copper roof, a weather
vane depicting two school children and their dog, and four
decorative urns.

The clocks, which are driven by a synchronized electric
movement, have not been operational for quite some time.
Some of the clock faces have been worn by time and
exposure, and most of the clock hands have been stolen or
damaged.  The weather vane has been damaged and is
currently in storage.  The tower leaks water, with the risk of
serious structural damage.
